Early Orthodontics

It's never too early to begin improving your child's smile! When Dr. Adams identifies malocclusion, crowded or crooked teeth along with bite problems, early orthodontic treatment can ultimately prevent more extensive and costly treatment in the future.

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends all children be screened by an Orthodontic Specialist before their seventh birthday.

Few things to look for that may mean your child needs to see an orthodontist:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Hard time chewing or biting food
  • Mouth breathing
  • Finger or thumb sucking
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws that pop or make sounds when opening and closing
  • Teeth that come together abnormally, or do not come together at all
  • Jaws and teeth that are not proportionate to the rest of the face
  • Crowded front teeth around age 7 or 8

Problems that can be treated most effectively at an early age:

  • Thumb habits - Correct thumb-sucking can help improve minor speech and functional problems
  • Severe Crowding - Create more space for crowded teeth
  • Crossbites & Underbites - Correct and guide the growth of your child's jaw to help permanent teeth come in straight
  • Prevention - Avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions later in life

By beginning Orthodontic treatment earlier in a child's life, the benefits far surpass appearance. When Dr. Adams improves the appearance and function of our patients earlier in life, we help to increase their self-esteem!
